The publication of Mystery on the Vineyard went to my head. I enjoyed the research and writing, and to see my name on the book jacket felt good. I did sell a few books, but not enough to quit my day job.
After a few months the excitement evolved into a question, “Why not do this again?”
There had not been much written about the history of Black people on the Vineyard, and I knew there was a great deal to share, having worked with the African American Trail and read Bob Hayden’s book on prominent Vineyard Blacks. I read up on slavery on the Vineyard in the 18th century. And I learned Massachusetts abolished slavery in 1783. I consulted with friends, who shared their stories, and included as much relevant data as possible.
It was easier to assemble the material for this second book. Joyce helped with the images, and I was able to submit a manuscript. My second book was published: African Americans of Martha’s Vineyard in 2010, available on thomasdresser.com.
That President Obama vacationed on the Vineyard inspired a surge in Black tourism. Book sales exceeded expectations. And today, African Americans of Martha’s Vineyard is my best-selling book.
