Cinco de Mayo
May. 5, 2026
Today is Cinco de Mayo and as a Mexican rescue pup, I look forward to celebrating. Hopefully my missus will sneak a taco or a few nachos into my food bowl. You never know what’s for dinner until the food is right there, in front of you.
My ol’ man shared the back story of Cinco de Mayo. Apparently, the French, under Napoleon III, attacked Mexico in 1862 because Mexico had no money to return loan payments for recent wars. The French Navy attacked the town of Puebla en route to Mexico City. The outnumbered, but fierce, Mexican Army defeated the French in the first battle of Puebla. When the president of Mexico, Benito Juarez, returned to power, he celebrated the Battle of Puebla Day or the Battle of Cinco de Mayo.
And we Mexicans and Americans have been celebrating ever since.
Today my ol’ man and I enjoyed a sunny two mile walk around the Chop. It feels like spring. Lawns mowed. Birds chirping. Street lines repainted. Turkeys strutting about. Forsythia in bloom. There’s more warmth in the air, closer to 50 degrees than 40, and the wind has died down.
Yesterday my ol’ man lost his hat to the breeze more than once, and I felt blown and buffeted by the winds. My missus spent the day over in America, getting her car serviced and catching up on off-Island shopping deals, while lunching at my ol’ man’s favorite: Burger King. We missed her all day, but she made up for it with a few extra treats at dinner time.
And now today, Cinco de Mayo is underway.
