New Bedford
May 4, 2026
When we began Kutter’s Commentary, back in January 2025, the plan was for Kutter to offer a dog’s perspective on being a dog and I would write about books, writing, politics or whatever. Joyce is the editor, and we publish daily at 8:30 am, if all the gears fall into line.
Today we want to recognize my daughter Jill. In 1994 she set off for Tulane University and graduated, then remained in New Orleans for thirty-something years, running her French Quartour Tours, teaching and marrying Curt. This weekend she relocated to New Bedford, back in New England, relatively near us, and very happy to be in a more liberal environment.
Curt has been here to help her move and promises to follow when he finishes projects at Tulane, where he is an assistant professor.
Joyce and I visited the four of them in New Bedford this afternoon. (Two of their dogs are relocating along with Jill.). Their apartment is right by the harbor, near the ferry to the Vineyard and Whaling Museum, not far from the school where Jill will finish off the school year teaching third grade. She’s laying the groundwork for Curt and she to fully migrate back to New England. This first step is impressive.
Jill is intrigued by the people in New Bedford. There are nearby parks to walk the dogs. The welcoming atmosphere for all people is evident, regardless of race, gender or immigration status. Massachusetts is a world apart from Louisiana. Jill would like to re-establish her kids tour group, but teaching, and readying her apartment come first.
We enjoyed time with them in their new abode. And we savored the luncheon at Moby Dick Brewing Company, across from the Museum. It’s exciting to discover a new community, and brave to start off in a new environment, far from home.
We wish you the best, Jill. Kutter’s Commentary readers encourage your success.
