Ring time
March 21, 2026
Yesterday, my ol’ man and my missus and me piled into my ol’ man’s little red car and drove downtown. He parked right across from Stefanie Wolfe’s jewelry store. We went inside, yes, I was included and welcomed by the clerk, Katharine Reed, whom my folks know. She was more attentive to me than them at first.
I meandered around the shop while my missus went right up to the desk and Katharine pulled out a box of rings. My missus was very interested in one of them, and there was some chatter on size and shape, but I was more interested in sniffing the shoes of a couple of patrons at the far end of the store.
Finally, my missus called me, and my ol’ man paid the bill and we headed outside.
What was that all about? Turns out my missus has a birthday coming up, and this was the treat she wanted.

My ol’ man told me that the last time they went off to a jewelry store was nearly thirty years ago, well before my time. Adam Thomas was with them and something big had just happened. At the house, my missus’ three kids and my ol’ man’s two daughters were all sitting around the table in the dining room, chattering among themselves. There was a knock on the door and my ol’ man and my missus answered it. It was two neighbor friends.
They came in and made small talk as they needed to borrow something for Thanksgiving dinner, as was a tradition. One woman looked at my missus and commented on how nice her hair looked. My ol’ man said, “It’s part of our prenup.” The five kids across the room got very quiet.
My missus said, “What prenup?” My ol’ man asked, “Do you want to get married?” My missus said, “You’re asking me in front of our friends and our kids?”
My ol’ man just smiled. And nodded.
Pretty soon my ol’ man, my missus and Adam were in the car heading off to buy an engagement ring.
True story according to my folks,
Kutter
