Tenebrae
April 4, 2026
On Thursday evening, Holy Thursday, I attended, actually participated in, my first Tenebrae service.
Tenebrae is the Passion, the betrayal, the suffering and death of Jesus. It’s a heavy moment, very powerful.
The service was held at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, and was beautiful. Peaceful. Poignant. Powerful.
Tenebrae is Latin for darkness, and the service was shrouded. We were dressed in black. The lights were dimmed as the service proceeded. The hymns were haunting.
As I learned, the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is loosely based on the Gospel accounts of the Passion of Jesus, his suffering and crucifixion. Judas plays a significant role in the musical; our Tenebrae service included Peter’s betrayal as well.
Personally, I have gained a good deal from our participation in this church. I’ve learned a lot of religious dogma and enjoyed working with fellow congregants. We have not run into any big egos in the church. And we love our minister, which is key.
Tomorrow is Easter. We wish you a very Happy Easter.

Sounds like a beautiful Holy Thursday. Wish I could have been there.
Happy Easter!
